Potrero Beach being a protected bay is known more for fishing and diving than for surfing, however there are many great surf breaks nearby.

Charter boats can be arranged from the Marina to take surfers to locations such as Witches Rock which are otherwise inaccessible. Other nearby areas frequented by surfers are, Playa Grande, Avellanas, Tamarindo and others. Most are within 30 minutes drive or half that by boat.

There are many good places for the novice to learn and others that are best left to the experts. Be sure to check with a local surf shop for any local hazards or things to be aware of. Local surf shops will rent boards and there are instructors available to help you get started. You may also need a shorty or skin if you plan on spending a lot of time out on the water.
